Built on a strong foundation of scientific knowledge, artistic technique, and clear visual communication, the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine has maintained the highest standards while embracing new medical, scientific, and communication technologies. The Department is dedicated to providing the educational competencies and motivation necessary for graduates to attain the highest standards as professional medical illustrators through a two-year, accredited, Master of Arts program in Medical and Biological Illustration. Concurrent with these educational goals, the faculty and staff of the department strive to provide the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions with preeminent biomedical communications services, producing illustrations, animations, and graphic design. An anaplastology clinic within the Department also creates facial and somatic prosthetics for patients and offers a one-year training program in clinical anaplastology. Read our Mission Statement Admissions The Medical and Biological Illustration graduate program is conducted by the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine on the East Baltimore Campus of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions (JHMI). The academic calendar, faculty and student affairs are administered by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The Department has trained medical illustrators for 100 years. The program has been granted full accreditation since 1970. Medical Illustration Services We produce artwork for journal, book, slide, video, animation, mobile apps and websites. Images are produced in color, tone, and line. We provide our clients with effective, cost-conscious and timely illustration services. Contact us to set up a complimentary consult about your project. Prosthetics The prostheses a clinical anaplastologist makes are non weight-bearing and are worn externally, on the skin surface to cover, protect, and modify disfigured or missing anatomy in the face, eye or body. These devices are not meant to be “perfect” or “totally indistinguishable.” Instead, they are “realistic enough” to allow the wearer to maintain social interaction while minimizing discomfort. The primary concern is to protect and maximally restore function through a safe and comfortable prosthesis. About Our Graduate Program The Department of Art as Applied to Medicine was endowed in 1911 and has been teaching medical illustration continuously. In 1959, the Johns Hopkins University approved a two-year graduate program leading to the University-wide degree of Master of Arts in Medical and Biological Illustration. The program is conducted by the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine on the East Baltimore Campus of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions (JHMI). The academic calendar, faculty and student affairs are administered by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The Department has trained medical illustrators for 100 years. The program has been granted full accreditation since 1970. It is currently accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) in cooperation with the Accreditation Review Committee for the Medical Illustrator (ARC-MI). Today, its graduates continue the Hopkins "tradition of excellence" into the 21st century. Apply now News & Announcements : July 28, 2020 Jeffrey Day, MD, MA – Promoted to Assistant Professor Jeff Day is a full-time faculty member, medical illustrator and animator in the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine. His research is focused on the measurable impact of visuals and usability in multimedia to improve learning, speed of information delivery, and learner engagement. Since he joined our faculty last August, Jeff has assumed the following teaching roles: co-instructor in Biological Illustration (the National Aquarium project), 2D Animation, and Design of Interactive Learning Experiences; team-teacher in OR Sketching, Surgical Illustration, and a thesis advisor in Research and Thesis. He has developed and will teach Introduction to Design, a new course familiarizing incoming students with principles of design, cognitive theory and user-centered thinking. Let’s take a look at the Figure Drawing category. We consider Figure Drawing to be the advanced study of the human figure drawn from direct observation of the model. Examples should include both long and short poses and may be rendered in a variety of media. We ask for a minimum of 5 Figure Drawings, a majority of which should be long poses but please include a couple of short pose drawings as well (see below). Your Figure Drawings should include the full figure, head to toe. Portraits and hand and foot studies are considered General Drawing. Short Poses Short poses are demonstrations of quick gestural sketches from direct observation ranging from 1 minute to 30 minutes in length.
