CA Admissions The Clinical Anaplastology graduate program is conducted by the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine who administers the academic calendar, faculty and student affairs. With two full-time Certified Clinical Anaplastologist faculty and an integral connection to the Facial, Eye & Body Prosthetics Clinic, the CA program provides students with the knowledge to succeed as clinicians providing facial, ocular, and somatic prostheses. Prosthetics The prostheses a clinical anaplastologist makes are non weight-bearing and are worn externally, on the skin surface to cover, protect, and modify disfigured or missing anatomy in the face, eye or body. These devices are not meant to be perfect” or totally indistinguishable.” Instead, they are realistic enough” to allow the wearer to maintain social interaction while minimizing discomfort. The primary concern is to protect and maximally restore function through a safe and comfortable prosthesis. Teaching in medical illustration has occurred continuously since that time. In 1959, Johns Hopkins University approved a two-year Master of Arts program in Medical and Biological Illustration (MBI). In 2022, Johns Hopkins University approved a two-year Master of Science graduate program in Clinical Anaplastology (CA). Both graduate programs are conducted by the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine on the East Baltimore Campus of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions (JHMI). The academic calendar, faculty and student affairs are administered by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The Department has trained students for over 100 years. The MBI program has been granted full accreditation since 1970, and is currently accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) in cooperation with the Accreditation Review Committee for the Medical Illustrator (ARC-MI). The CA program was approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission in spring 2022, and the first CA student enrolled in Fall 2022.
